Sometimes the thought of packing for a 5-day trip can seem like a daunting task. BUT…If you pack smart and as a minimalist packing takes no more than 15 minutes for a 5-day trip, and enjoying the trip becomes more of the focus. Here are my tips on to how to pack:
1. Interchangable Chargers
The key to packing less, even with more, is to use interchangable chargers. This requires a wall and car charger that allows for USB inserts to various electronic devices. For me packing includes: a tripod, two extra phone batteries, an extra camera battery, camera lense, and various USB’s that charge all extra batteries, camera, phone and iPad. BOOM!
2. Travel Size Toiletries
For me, traveling isn’t about making a fashion statement. I am just trying to look presentable and enjoy the experience and people, on a budget. That said, going to CVS and picking up the $1 travel packs of a few things usually last 10-days.
3. Pack Clothes That Can Be Mix-Matched
I was once told to pack half of what you think you actually need. Yes, that’s right… pack everything you think you need then cut it in half. I still have found fun with my clothing, but still pack light by bringing solid colors that can be mix-matched. This allows for many outfits to be made from the same few staple pieces.
For a 5-day trip this includes: 3 solid color tank tops, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of jeans, a dress, swimsuit, bra that can work as a swim suit, under wear and an accessory… this time it is a shawl that can be used as a cover-up dress and/or scarf.
I know what you’re thinking… this is easy to say if you’re going somewhere warm, but not somewhere cold. FALSE, I have used the same backpack for both my 2 week trip to Iceland and for my 5-day trip to Hawaii.
Extra Tip: Wear your heaviest clothes and shoes on the plane. This can save you on a cold flight, but also lighten your load.
